Richmond, Virginia

We left Asheville after eating lunch, and headed for a long drive towards Richmond, VA. As we were already running late for the day, we decided to take the faster highway instead of the more scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, on which we drove towards Asheville. Most of the late afternoon and evening were spent in the car (except for a brief visit to Wendy’s), and we only arrived at our destination very late at night and very tired.

Even though we just wanted to check in and go to bed, we couldn’t help but look a bit around the hotel. Yet again, Alexandra had worked her special kind of magic in finding this place. In the Quirk Hotel, everything is either a sort of marble, off-white or a shade of rosy pink, and all the staff members were wearing very colorful bow ties. Our room was also quirky in a sense—the walls were a delicate shade of pink, and the ceiling was extremely high above our heads. We also had a tiny pink retro-looking fridge on the floor; Theodor was quick to figure out how to open it, much to our displeasure.

After we had put Theodor to sleep, we contemplated going to bed as well. However, since this was our last night out on the trip, we forced ourselves to freshen up and go down to the hotel bar and have some cocktails. Good thing we did; they were so good!

Only at breakfast the next morning did we see what the hotel truly looked like. The lobby, restaurant and bar were all placed in the same cavernous hall complete with original limestone arches in the ceiling to great effect. We had a nice breakfast—an omelette with bacon and broccoli, some fruits and coffee.

After breakfast, we strolled around the surrounding area. The shops were all closed though, since it was so early in the morning, but the general impression of the area was good, definitely a place to visit again! We also briefly conversed with some very smartly dressed older gentlemen, who complimented Theodor;s clothes, and wo was very interested in our travels across the country. However, we had to cut the conversation short, as we were on a strict schedule for our next stop: Washington, DC!
